A chance to experience Virtual Reality this year
We've all been hearing about the Oculus Rift for a long time now, and after its acquisition by Facebook, we still have not heard of a solid or estimated consumer release date yet. Whilst the Oculus Rift has gained in popularity, other companies have begun working on the development of their own take on Virtual Reality (VR) hardware!
One such company, Steam, has partnered with HTC to build a new type of VR headset. While this VR headset is similar to the Oculus Rift - it is not exactly the same. Steam has stated that their VR headset will be available this year [source]!
I don't know about you, but this writer is extremely excited by all of the continuous development - and the direction these developments are heading. The faster that VR becomes main stream, the closer we may come to being able to visit unique and amazing sights, or even real tourist locations from the comfort of home! In fact, Disney has reported that they are considering creating a VR experience of their world famous Disneyland theme parks [source].
Maybe, one day soon, we will have access to a more powerful form of interaction over the internet, imagine meeting up for virtual coffee with acquaintances in a digital world, holding networking or sales events on a digital representation of the moon... Not just simple video chat, but realistic interaction - almost as if you were there in person. We may be far from such steps, but everything is pointing to a more that exciting future in the realm of VR.
